Digestion &
Absorption
In general foods
must be broken down (hydrolyzed) or simplified chemically before
they can be assimilated by the body. This Is true of the
carbohydrates, fats, and proteins, It is not true of water and
inorganic ions, for they pass from the digestive tract and are
absorbed In their original form. This simplification or breakdown of
food Is accomplished by the action of different enzymes, which are
active In the mouth, esophagus, stomach and the small and large
intestines.
Scientists estimate that the human body produces over 100,000
different types of enzymes each one accomplishing an entirely
Independent function in sustaining life. The enzymes produced In the
pancreas and small intestine which are so important in digestion are
Protease (act on protein), lipase (act on fat) and Amylase (act on
starch). These enzymes catalyze (bring about) the hydrolysis of
native protein to amino acids, starches to simple sugar, and fats to
glycerol and fatty acids. It is probable in the course of these
digestive reactions that minerals and vitamins of food a stuffs are
also made more assimilable. This is certainly true of fat-soluble
vitamins, which are not absorbed unless fat digestion is proceeding
normally.
The
physiological activity of man changes greatly with advancing
years. Age brings In a gradual retardation of cell division, cell
excretions and overall body function. Studies have shown that 35 %
of people over 60 years old have some sort of digestive malfunction.
In fact disturbances of the all alimentary tract rank second only to
cardiovascular disorders as causes of morbidity in the aged.
Good health at
any age, and especially in the old, depends on proper nutrition.
Since efficient digestion Is a prerequisite for adequate absorption
then if sufficient enzymes to breakdown food are not produced by the
body In the pancreas, stomach, and small intestine then
complications such as weight loss, flatulence, chronic constipation,
non infectious diarrhea and abdominal discomfort will occur.
The
Function of Enzymes
To understand
the function of an enzyme without getting into a complex
discussion of molecular chemistry simply consider the enzyme as
similar to a knife slicing a loaf of bread. The knife, "undergoing
no change" acts as a catalyst causing a "chemical reaction" The
breaking down of the loaf of bread - Thereby putting the bread into
a more useful form. Essentially, enzymes accomplish what the knife
does in our example. Their catalytic action breaks down food into
particles small enough to be absorbed and used by the body.
To fully a
appreciate how important and efficient enzymes are consider the
following. In order for a chemist to break down the white of an egg,
which is protein in nature, he must first add to it about ten tines
its weight in concentrated acid. He must then boil this mixture for
twenty hours!
Polyenzyme Plus
Is
a combination of different fungal and vegetable produced enzymes
designed to supplement the bodies naturally produced digestive
enzymes. It consists of Vegetable Protease (Papain), Acid Stable
Protease, Fungal Protease (as pancreatic protease), Fungal Lipase,
Fungal Amylase, and Fungal Cellulase.
The combination of the above enzymes and the activity and strength
in which they are formulated will insure that digested food will be
properly hydrolyzed and absorbed. Since the above enzymes are stable
and active in both the acid medium of the stomach mid the neutral
environment of the small intestine they do not need a special
treatment or coating for stability.
All of the
enzymes and ingredients in Polyenzyme Plus are considered as GRAS by
the FDA.
The
Protease contained in one 400 mg Polyenzyme Plus
tablet (capsule) is
capable of hydrolyzing (breaking down) 125 g of casein (milk
protein) in one hour at 37 degrees C.
The
Amylase in one 400 mg tablet will hydrolyze 100 g
of starch/hour at 37 degrees C. This amount starch is equivalent to
the starch in three potatoes.
The
Lipase in one 400 mg tablet will hydrolyze
and produce 60 moles of free fatty acid from fat in 1 hour at 37
degrees C.
The
Cellulase & Hemi-Cellulase are added to the formula
even though humans do not produce cellulase enzymes because they
assist in breaking down the cellular wall of vegetable foods. This
is important since it avoids excessive fermentation by intestinal
microorganisms. The Cellulase & Hemi - Cellulase in one 400 mg
tablet will digest 530 parts of dry vegetable solids for each part
of enzyme in 1 hour at 37 degrees C. It should be
remembered that only about 25% of vegetable matter is cellulose.
The
Plus factor in Polyenzyme Plus Is the incorporation
with the enzymes of a pure strain of Lactobacillus Acidophilus.
It has been known for many years that the Lactobacillus microbe
plays an important role In human nutrition. One only has to look at
the large number of people in the world who consume fermented type
dairy products (yogurt, cheeses) on a daily basis to realize the
beneficial effect this bacteria has on our digestive process. Some
experts on age feel the longevity of the people in south west Russia
can be attributed to the quantity of fermented type mile products
they consume.
In the
intestines there are numerous types of bacteria and it has been
estimated that 25 % of the dry weight of feces is composed of
intestinal flora. Essentially in the normal adult, and the following
will vary from person to person based on the diet he consumes, the
prominent forms of bacteria present are gram negative coliform
bacilli, gram negative anaerobes called Bacteroides, Clostridia,
Enterococci, Streptococci and small numbers of Loctobacilli,
Proteus, Pseudomonas and Yeast.
Although the
numbers of Lactobacilli are known to be small they play an
important part in maintaining the pH of the intestine by producing
lactic acid from carbohydrates particularly Glycogen.
The production
of acid helps to maintain a normal flora by suppressing the
growth of acid sensitive microbes which could proliferate at a
higher pH and produce various toxic substances such as choline;
related toxic amine and cause in some cases acute or chronic
enteritis, diarrhea, constipation and indigestion.
Since the number
of lactobacilli in the intestines is small it is essential that
the human body maintain proper level or number of this particular
culture. When a person because of some type of illness
requires oral antimicrobial drugs they suppress the drugs
susceptible components of the fecal flora and allow drug resistant
strains such as staphylococci and aerobacter to become predominate
in the intestine. This in turn causes the later bacteria to produce
toxins and gases and causes the loss of the benefits derived from
normal bacterial activity in the intestinal synthesis of certain
vitamins particularly vitamin K and certain members of the B
complex.
